Margazhi Musings 2019: Kunnakkudi BMK

Date: 11th Dec 2019 / 19:00 Hrs

Venue: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore

Team: Kunnakkudi BMK, Sairam (Mridangam), Sundarkumar (Kanjira)

Kunnakkudi BMK belongs to that group of musicians whose rasikas are increasing day by day. He stands out for his energy and experiments. Trained in both Mridangam and vocal, he is outstanding in laya usage as well as intricate gamaks. He once remarked, in an interview, that most of his preparations happen in mind and his manodharma on the stage! Well, who am I to miss his concert!

He started off with a brisk MMG “Sivalokanathanai kandu.” As if that was not enough to bring to their feet even the most demanding, he proceeded to Ravichandrika and took up “Maa kelara.” A sheer beauty! Delhi Sairam, on Mridangam, and Shree Sundar Kumar on Kanjira were outstanding. They gave each one a tough fight.

An elaborate RTP with the Pallavi lines “Lalithe Vinuthe Maam Pahi Bhagavathi
Gunavathi Dharmavathi” took up more than 45 minutes. But, to me, the concert belonged to Mohanam. That was the centrepiece although other rasikas might struggle to pick one over the other. Thyagaraja’s “Evarura ninnuvina” was the chosen one. He exhibited his full laya control. There is an unhurried manner that is distinctive of BMK and belies his energy! The rasikas are in for a treat this season.
